As the complementary therapy industry expanded rapidly, health insurers introduced stricter requirements. The original article describes traditional paper records as no longer sufficient and digital treatment record management as a basic part of industry practice.
The original article sets out nib’s treatment record requirements as follows:
1. Recognised providers must retain complete treatment records for every customer they treat. Records for nib customers must be kept for the minimum period required by legislation relevant to the recognised provider’s profession.
2. Records must be accurate and up to date, and sufficient for nib to confirm that the recognised provider supplied each professional service claimed by the nib customer as described in the relevant benefit claims. Treatment records must include:
(a) The customer’s name, address, gender, date of birth and contact telephone number;
(b) The date on which treatment and/or services were provided, details of each treatment and/or service, and the fee charged;
(c) The nature of the illness or condition;
(d) Any herbs, medicines and treatment plans used by the patient at home, supplied during the consultation or prescribed.
3. nib reserves the right to request patient and/or treatment records for any nib customer for any reason. The recognised provider must supply copies within 10 business days of the request.
